North Point Real Estate and Savannah College of Art and Design Partner in Landmark Restoration of Curtis V. Cooper Primary Health Care Center
North Point Real Estate and the Savannah College of Art and Design have officially announced plans to renovate the former Westside-Urban Health building at 115 E. York St. Upon completion of the renovation project, SCAD plans to lease the building to expand the college’s administrative office space.
SAVANNAH, Ga. – North Point Real Estate and the Savannah College of Art and Design have joined forces to renovate the former Curtis V. Cooper Primary Health Care Center located at 115 E. York Street, which moved its facility to 106 E. Broad Street nearly two years ago.
“North Point and SCAD are delighted to work together to restore a building with great historic significance,” said Jeff Jepson, a principal of North Point Real Estate, a Savannah-based firm which plans and develops office, industrial and residential properties in the region and purchased the property earlier this year. “We’re excited to be able to restore such a landmark building within the historic district.”
In partnership with the Savannah College of Art and Design, North Point will follow historic restoration guidelines while restoring the inner sanctum of the 60,000-square-foot building. The Carson Company, a local contractor, will handle the construction and restoration process. Hansen Architects of Savannah will oversee the renovation’s architecture. Upon completion, the college plans to lease the building to use for administrative office space.
The building was originally constructed by the U.S. Public Health Service in 1906 to serve as a U.S. Marine Hospital. In 1977, the property became the Urban Health Center of Savannah, Inc. and then merged with the Westside Comprehensive Health Center, Inc. in 1981 to form the Westside-Urban Health Center, Inc.
On May 27, 2003, the facility’s name again changed to Curtis V. Cooper Primary Health Care, Inc., in honor of Curtis V. Cooper, a well-known and highly respected civil rights leader in Savannah who also shaped the nature of health care for the poor in his native city. In the 1970's Cooper successfully secured funds for the establishment of a comprehensive health center for the city's indigent, which later became the Westside-Urban Health Center. He remained executive director for the center until his death in January 2000.
